Troweled Overlays offer the most creative possibilities of any type of finish. They can be applied to almost any substrate of stable condition. The job shown here was performed over an ordinary concrete patio. ![]() First, the surface is prepped to include grinding of uneven slabs, pressure washing, filling cracks with epoxy, and acid etching.
Then, the skim coat is applied. This is a very thin layer of polymer cement applied at 1/32" to act as a bond layer for all other work performed.
Next, the pattern is laid using a special fiber reinforced tape. This can be done in any pattern, or popular stock patterns can be chosen What you see is a brick herringbone pattern, broken up with a brick band, and a brick soldier course border.
Then polymer cement is troweled over the tape. Here we are giving the surface a texture that will have the appearance of real brick.
Once done, the surface looks like this.
The concrete is then stained different colors to compliment the home and surrounding hardscape.
The fiber tape is then pulled, leaving a reveal and producing the pattern. This is able to be done within a short window after the material is applied. It has not yet cured and the tape is able to pull through.
A Sealer is applied and the dramatic result is a patio that cost much less than brick pavers, better looking than stamped concrete, and is more durable than just about any other option you can think of.
